U Nyan Win, said that Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi

The detained leader of the country’s democracy movement, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, opposes registering her party for the elections planned this year in Myanmar because the governing junta’s many restrictions are “unjust,” her lawyer said Tuesday. The lawyer, U Nyan Win, said that Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, left, had said that she would “not even think” of registering the party, the National League for Democracy, for the elections. But she also said that party members should decide whether the party would participate. Her comments came hours after Myanmar’s highest court refused to accept a lawsuit filed by the party, which sought to revoke five new election laws. The laws set out rules for the election, which have been widely criticized as intended to keep Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi out of the race.
